water's relationship with our hair (hair art)

MOISTURE

INSPIRATION
Water and hair that frizzes has an irregular relationship. Outside of our little online hair care niche, there's still many colored girls that believe that water is the enemy. Even for us that know otherwise, we might not want to jump head first for fret of messing up our preserved hairstyle or having to go through the task of washing out the sea salt residue later. This is a dilemma that relaxed heads, naturals, and everyone in between are eligible of facing. I'm not saying there's anything wrong in missing the occasional pool party or beach trip, it's when it gets to the point where it feels like you're being tied down by your own hair.

Hair shouldn't hold you back from enjoying life. I love swimming. Being able to float when completely enveloped in water just gives a sense of letting go, and for me, that feeling is worth having your hair turn wild afterwards. It's a mark that you enjoyed yourself.

BEACH WAVES
Summer is almost over, so if you haven't hit the water yet, this might be your last chance. Just don't forget to prep your hair first. Make sure it's already wet with fresh water, coat it with some conditioner and oil, and tie it up before diving in. That way it's harder for it to absorb the chlorine or sea salt. And if you have the choice between the pool and the beach, from experience I believe the beach is the healthier option. Salt, though usually in smaller amounts, actually aids in conditioning. When I coat my hair in conditioner before submerging in salt water, I hardly notice drying when coming out.

The number of days counting down goes for me, too. Yes, I"m one of the ones you hasn't gotten to hit the water yet, summer just went by so quick! So this is my last post for August, cause I'm going to Florida. See ya!

This art piece started in pencil, was scanned, then colored in and shaded on Gimp.

some site updates (and a big reveal)

Posted by Yahya at 8:40 PM 1 comments
  • You might have noticed the new widget on my blog's right column. Well, PHS is now on Instagram! Follow me to keep up with hair photos, PHS stuff, and shots of my life. It's to commemorate me finally gotting my hands on a descent camera (you might have also noticed the better quality in recent pics).
  • Next update, you know how I sensor my face a little with my meeko stamp? Well no more! From now on I'll be showing my face. Click on the image below for the reveal (starts drum roll).
  • Lastly, I plan on joining KLP's and Jeni's #washdayexperience to motivate myself into documenting my wash days more thoroughly and sharing it with everyone. Now that the majority of my hair is Japanese straightened, it seems to be needing a lot less.

no internet no life

Posted by Yahya at 6:15 PM 0 comments
Finally! Internet, how I’ve missed you!

May 30th I got my hair touch-uped because it had been more than 6 months since my last, and the day after I would be taking a trip to the Midwest where I’d be visiting the apartment where my boyfriend was staying. Unlucky me, I came right when they started having trouble with their internet signal. I’ve been internet-less for about 3 weeks. I’m not like most my age where I can’t survive without my phone or social media for a day or even a week--but having no internet at all? For 3 weeks?

I’m the type of person that looks up everything on the internet as soon as a question pops up in my head. That’s how I’ve become so hair care knowledgeable. Not being able to look up questions was horrible. I would constantly get a loose end feeling that'd just keep itching me! There were so many unfulfilled questions accumulated by the end of the week. But everything is okay now, I’m okay, I'm okay... I’m back on the other side of the digital divide, so I’m okay.

I'll be updating about my recent touch-up in the next couple days. I have a break from school now, so I should have more time to work on my blogging.

(Pssst! Look at my new Pocahontas necklace, my boyfriend gave it to me <3)

some site updates!

Posted by Yahya at 6:12 PM 2 comments
  • Hey guys, PHS is now on Pinterest! Check it out to see hair pictures I don't have up here. Pictures I plan on featuring in upcoming posts will also probably be posted there first. Hint, hint. And if you didn't see from my recent last blog post, I'll also be using Pinterest's widget to serve as the site's gallery.

  • Some of you have mentioned that you have a hard time using the site's comment box. It doesn't work for you unless you change browsers or you can't use it at all. I'm not sure how to fix it, but I've added a Facebook comment box plugin along side it. Hopefully this helps.

  • Lastly, to my Facebook followers, I have linked my blog posting to PHS's Facebook page. So now, with every new post here there will be an automatic linked post on Facebook. No more having to wait for slow poke me to also update Facebook. And speaking of which, PHS now has 99 likes! Whoo! Was surprised since I've been neglecting the site. Who wants to be the awesome person to make it one hundred? ((looks around for takers))

absence (& introducing hair art)

Posted by Yahya at 9:43 PM 0 comments
Hello everyone! I know some of you have been wondering where I've been. Now that I'm in my junior year of college, working part time, and have other things in my life I have to pay attention to, I just have not had the time to blog. So I just wanted to officially announce my absence so you guys don't think that PHS is over or anything. Right now, the site is just taking a break. I might manage to post every now and then, but it's not going to be on a schedule or frequent.

You might have also noticed the site is going through a little change. I'm still working on it, but again, been too busy to finish it up.

Another change I intend to make is to post hair themed artwork every now and then. I'm just getting use to creating artwork on the computer. This is actually only my second-third time. I drew the image below first by drawing an outline in pencil, scanning it, then coloring and shading it on Gimp.

You guys didn't know I was an artist, did you?

meeko & another pocahontas

Posted by Yahya at 3:30 PM 1 comments
Sooooorry, this is the probably the latest post I've done. How long has it been since my last, three weeks? My college work really piled this weekend ...even now, and I'm still catching up. ;_;

You might have noticed my new meeko raccoon icon. I've decided that I need to be more cautious about labeling my hair pics, so he's going to be my little signature. Yes, I have a weakness for cute things.

Last week was my first time being referenced by a video! I was just one of many length comparison photos, but it's still nice to have been used. The video was by upcoming youtuber Longnhealthy, she's been gaining popularity for her eye catching growth aid videos. She's tried various things and usually sees note worthy results. In Hairlista, I joined her 6 inches in 6 months growth challenge group since I would be testing my growth aids around the same given time period. Both of us use Pocahontas as our hair inspirations! Great minds think alike. Here she talks of how she does the inversion method and shows people, like me, who had success using the method.

Oh! And side a note, remember when I said that I think the inversion method was given a name after it entered the afro hair care community? I was right! It think longnhealthy who coined the term.

the green house effect (GHE) method

Posted by Yahya at 9:33 PM 14 comments
WHAT'S THE GHE?
In my last post about how I tripled and then octupled my hair growth rate, I said that the GHE method was the main factor in my growth increase (followed by the inversion method). For those of you who don't know, the GHE method is simply keeping your hair in a plastic cap over night. It's advised to do this no more than every other night and at least once a week. You can follow the plastic cap with a scarf to secure it or another cap to increase the effect. Or, if your relaxed and want to preserve your style you can put on a scarf before the plastic cap.

The GHE method originated from the Real Queens Regimen. The method creates a steam like effect on your hair and scalp. When we put a plastic cap on for an hour to deep condition, our body's temperature naturally heats the environment trapped in the plastic. GHEing uses the same idea, the reason for its name. So isn't that just baggying your whole head? Yes and no. The difference with the GHE method is that the main focus is on the scalp. Though you can, you don't have to apply anything on your hair or scalp before doing the GHE method. The aim is to put your head in a steamy environment for 6-8 hours. Oil or leave-in is optional, though I would advice only using a little. You can get a moisture overload if your not careful. Plus, your scalp and hair is going to be moist after using the method whether you used product with it or not. The steam effect increases blood circulation and aids sebum flow, increasing your growth rate and length retention.

For the past two years, I had been getting random growth spurts but didn't know who to credit it for as I had been doing multiple things at the same time. Finally I can give rightful credit to the GHE method!

HAIR SCIENCE (SEMI-RANT)

I remember on a popular hair care forum, there was a girl that started a GHE method challenge, claiming you can double or triple your normal growth rate. This was my first time encountering the method and I participated in the challenge for a short while (but stopped for a reason I can't remember). I remember in the challenge thread, she was given a hard time from older, 'more knowledgeable,' forum users who where trying to tell us that the GHE method is not going to triple, or even double, our growth rate and the minor increased growth people see is retained length.

I understand that they were trying to enlighten us and didn't want us to try something supposedly guide-less to end up disappointed. This, however, isn't a good mindset to keep when on a hair care journey. Whether your a novice or have been a healthy hair journey girl for years, we have to remember that we're not real scientists when regarding hair (well, there might be a couple out there but I'm generalizing). We can test things, analyze, and record, but we can't know exactly why we see the outcomes we get unless its been scientifically proven. We can make educated, logical guesses, but in the end they are guesses, not fact. I think that we do these 'experiments' so much that we forget we're not real scientists. The older forum users argued that growth rate can only increase through increased blood circulation and keeping your scalp clean. These, as far as we currently know, is true. From what I remember, I agreed, but brought to the table that the GHE method can be increasing blood circulation due to the heat it creates. No one would counter this point, yet still kept their strong opinions.

The point is, it's better to test something and then come up with an explanation, not the other way around. This is stuff we learned in elementary school: the scientific method. When we make a prediction and explanation it's called a hypothesis because it's only supported by the information we think is true, not reality. After we perform the experiment we have a better touch with reality and can come up with a better explanation--the conclusion. Our previous hypothesis might have been right or wrong, and if wrong we have to adjust our thinking. This is why healthy hair journey girls, especially those who have been on their path for a long time and develop egos (it's hard not to develop one! but there's a difference between ego and confidence) should always remember to stay open minded. None of us, whether we have been on our journey for 1 year or 30 years, know everything regarding hair. If we make a hypothesis (or pre-conclusion?) that something won't work and therefore we won't test it and tell other people not to test it, we can cause ourselves and others to miss out on tripling their growth. A journey is all about trial and error. Unless we have fear that something can negatively effect us, experiment.

That's kinda the whole point in me doing these growth aid exams

MY EXPERIMENT'S CONCLUSION
So why does the GHE method work? I have a couple reasons why. But remember I, and generally no one in our healthy hair journey community, is a scientist in this area. What we tell you are educated guesses from our own research and logic. The educated explanations I list might all be true, only one or two might hit the mark, or the reason might be something completely different. But I'm sure it's at least one of these reasons.

Increased sebum flow helps length retention. This might be a factor, but is differently not the prime suspect. To say that the GHE method only helps retain length is to say that I, and all the other girls that doubled or tripled their growth rate doing it, has an average growth rate of 1 or 2 inches a month. This is very very unlikely. The average growth rate is 1/2 an inch a month and my normal growth rate is 1/2 an inch every 5 weeks. And what makes this even more unlikely is that it suggests that when I don't do the GHE method I'm only retaining 1/4 of my normal growth rate. With the zero to minimum breakage I usually get, that's impossible.

Heated environment increases blood circulation. This is a more likely the reason for the increased growth rate. Our scalp is the most difficult place for our blood to circulate because the blood has to move upwards, to the top floor. Remember our follicles, not our hair, are alive. A good blood circulation means our follicles are receiving their proper nutrients, proper nutrients equal healthy follicles, and healthy follicles equals a good hair harvest.

Sebum has a naturally low pH, resulting in a healthier scalp conditions. Our sebum has a natural pH of 4.5-5.5, pretty much the same pH as our hair. (Note oils don't have a pH. Sebum is oily, but it contains water, and so a pH.) Keeping your scalp at a low pH keeps it healthy and protects our scalp from bacteria and fungus. I'm not sure, however, if it destroys the same type of fungus that grows in our sebum and minimizes our growth rate (this is how applying sulfur/oil mixes increase growth rate, it destroys these type of bacteria).

Steaming removes toxins. Though currently it's debated whether this is true. But if true, just like when we sweat the rest of our body supposedly detoxifies, the same would go for our scalp. A healthy clean scalp and healthy conditioned hair equals growth. Sweating cleanses, but then the sweat/sebum stays there on top the scalp unless we wash it off.  During my growth exams I might try cleaning my scalp after and see if there's a change in results. Though if I see an increase in growth rate, it might be because I'm unclogging my pores.
